4 Tips to Keep Your Sweet Tooth Under Control This Halloween

Happy Halloween Jack-o-Lantern

A sweet treat now and again doesn’t usually do too much harm. However, now that Halloween is here, you can’t get away from all of the candies available. Consuming too much added sugar can be harmful to your overall health and the health of your smile. As you are getting ready for the big night, you should be mindful of the dietary decisions you are making for the sake of your pearly whites. Here are some tips that can help!

Stick to Natural Sweets

If you aren’t having as many unnecessary sources of sugar, your body won’t be craving them as much. This way, you can better enjoy natural sources of sugar, like the ones you find in fruits and vegetables. Ultimately, you may enjoy the sweet flavor of an apple or pear instead of candies with artificial flavors and heaps of added sugar.

Get Enough Calories

When you are over-dieting and not consuming the number of calories that you need, you are more likely to end up with unhealthy cravings. This is because your body is looking for some quick fuel to catch up. This includes sugary treats. Be sure that you are consuming enough calories through whole healthy foods. This way, your sugar cravings won’t be nearly as intense.

Consume Plenty of Protein

Calories from heavy, starchy foods, like pasta, are absorbed quickly. This contains little fiber and protein, so it will not keep you full in the same way as whole foods. Next time you are enjoying a bowl of pasta for dinner, be sure to include some lean protein, like grilled chicken breast, and some veggies. This way, you are more likely to stay full and therefore crave less sugar. You will also get some great vitamins and minerals!

Rank Your Candies for Your Oral Health

Most people don’t want to completely rid themselves of their favorite treats. Instead of cutting out all of your Halloween candy, it’s a good idea to rank them in order from best to worst in terms of your oral health. For instance, sour candies are terrible for oral health because they are highly acidic and contain lots of sugar. A better option would be chocolate because it easily melts and washes away. The darker the chocolate, the less added sugar!

To keep your smile in good shape this spooky season, it’s important to be mindful of your sugar consumption. By using the tips listed above, you may be able to avoid an emergency trip to the dental office!
